St Nicholas Church ceased to be a place of worship in the mid 1600s, and was converted into a guildhall, theatre, school and gaol. In the mid 1800s, it once again became a church. In the 1818 Return, it is described as a common gaol, but clearly functioning only as a lock up house about 10 years later.
