Critical Remarks

In 1798 the House of Correction in St George's Field was abandoned and prisoners relocated to the new County Gaol at Horsemonger Lane (ID 72). However, the section of the prison given over to the House of Correction remained a separate institution in the official sources until after 1818. The reason for this is unclear, though the 1818 Return suggests that a new building was being erected for the House of Correction which on completion would enable the two institutions to officially merge.
