Critical Remarks

Used to hold prisoners awaiting trial at the Assizes until the completion of the new Gaol and House of Correction in Carliol Square (ID 111). The Castle Keep was also used to confine debtors in the interval between the demolition of the old Newcastle Newgate Gaol (ID 521) and the construction of the new Newcastle Gaol and House of Correction (ID 111).
