Critical Remarks

The Bridewell (ID 132) and Town Gaol were two separate institutions until at least 1828, the Gaol adjoining the Guildhall and part of a public house (Market Place) and the Bridwell located in the old workhouse (Cheap Street). By c1830, it appears that the two institutions had merged on the site of the Bridewell. This original Borough Gaol may well have been discontinued when the Guildhall was demolished in 1828.
