The Borough House of Correction on its first Highcross Street site dates from at least 1792. It was located next to the Borough Gaol (ID 636) which had been rebuilt in that year. In 1829, the Borough House of Correction moved to new premises further up Highcross Street (see ID 109), namely those of the old County Gaol (ID 491).
