At the opening of the 19th century, the Borough House of Correction was located in the yard of a workhouse. By 1818 the municipal authorities had purchased land adjacent to the town gaol for its enlargement, and by 1825 had erected a new building on that site to serve as the new borough House of Correction (ID 191).
