Critical Remarks

The Gravesend Town Hall was erected in 1764. It is unclear whether Gravesend Gaol was established at the same time. By the 1830s, it had become a lock up. A Gravesend Debtors' Gaol appears in the penal statistics for 1837 and could be the same institution. It does not appear again in the statistics.
