The Old Guidhall was built in the fifteenth century, so it is probable that the cells date from this time. They officially ceased to be used by 1878 in the wake of the 1877 Prison Act and the completion of a new Guildhall with police cells. Described in the 1818 Return as a common gaol, but 10 years later functioning only as a lock up.
