Opened April 1859, primarily for invalided male convicts, and by March 1860 had taken over entirely from the temporary invalid prison at Lewes (ID 1009). Between 1862 and 1867, responsible for the working party sent to labour for the construction of Broadmoor Criminal Asylum. Prison closed March 1889 as the decline in the convict population made it unnecessary to maintain a separate prison for invalids.
