Critical Remarks

Located adjacent to the Borough Gaol was the Borough Bridewell or House of Correction (ID 229), listed separately in the 1818 Return. Both moved to the premises of the old County Gaol in Nun’s Green, Friargate, in 1828 (ID 680). The return made in 1828 explains the move was underway and alterations of the old County Gaol were taking place, but in essentials referred to the old gaol.
