Description

'This lock up house stands in the middle of the village, and there is nothing objectionable in the site. It was built by subscription, and consists of a single cell (without any accommodation for a resident keeper), of an hexagonal form, 9 feet wide and 12 feet high. The door opens into a piece of land accessible to the public. The cell is dry, but dark, and without any provision for warming it. The keeper, who is a parish constable, saud that there were formerly loop-holes for the admission of light, but that a man, under a serious charge, which it was believed would have led to his transportation, made his escape by means of a tool handed in through one of the loop-holes, and that these loop-holes had, therefore, been nearly closed, a small passage only being left for air ... There were rugs and loose straw for bedding.'
