Building Type Lock-Up
'This lock up house is on the same construction as those at Wooler and Belford, and liable to the same objections. It stands at the foot of a hill outside the town. The site is dry, from the nature of the soil; but the constable who has charge of it said that it was at an inconvenient distance; since those who are apprehended and conveyed to it are often drunk at the time, and difficult to move.'
Inspectors of Prisons of Great Britain IV. Scotland, Northumberland and Durham, Twelfth Report (Parl. Papers, 1847, XXIX.381), p.131
