Descriptions

'At a View of Frankpledge [Court Leet]... 25 September 1565. The Swornmen present that Elizabeth Ventus has broken the fence of John Tompson and so is amerced 12d, and if she fails to pay, then and next, it is ordered that she shall sit in the stocks [in strictis pedibus] for one whole day, or else she should leave the township... The swornmen present that Mother Coppes, widow, has broken the fence within this manor and so is herself amerced 12d, and if she fails to pay that then and next it is ordered that she shall sit in the stocks for one whole day. '

'View of Frankpledge with Court, 25 April 1582...It is also ordered that if anyone is caught collecting wood upon the land of anyone else without first getting permission they shall be put in the stocks or expelled from the township.'

'At a View of Frankpledge with Court Baron, 5 May 1603...Next the jurors present that Agnes Knott, Avice Mylbroke, Katherine Lambkyn and Joan Lamkyne [are] scolds, producers of quarrels, that is to say scoldes with their neighbours, therefore it was decided by the steward because there was not in the township that is to say a cuckingstole to punish them according to the form of law, that each of them should be put in the stocks and in castro that is to say should be sett in the stockes for a certin space for thar misdemaneos. '
