Descriptions

'This new lock up house is in a good situation at the outskirts of the town and near the Court house and prison. It contains three cells, with rooms for a keeper and his wife. The cells are of about the same size as those in Pentonville Prison and are warmed and ventilated in a similar manner [but recurring problems with ventilation described] ... The cells are properly lighted with glazed windows, and appear to be quite secure. There was a proper supply of bedding.'

Inspectors of Prisons of Great Britain II. Northern and Eastern District, Sixteenth Report (Parl. Papers, 1851, XXVII.461), p.44

'A new Lock-up has just been built near the Union House, adjoining which a row of houses have been built for the residence of the turnkeys connected with the House of Correction.'
