Remarks The police station (but not the attached lock up) is mentioned as part of the 1849 inspection of the Central Police Station in Bristol located in Bridewell Street (ID 552).
'This building is far too small for the purpose for which it is employed, being a residence for fourteen policemen. The messroom and sleeping apartments are exceedingly close; and, from the proximity of the ill-drained privies to the living rooms of the officers, it is described as being very offensive in summer. There are three cells for prisoners, measuring about five feet nine inches square, with a height of eight feet. No bedding is allowed to the prisoners, but they have a barrack bed and bench in each cell. There is also a watercloset in each, supplied with water from the outside. Prisoners, however long they may be detained, have no food but bread and water, a practice upon which I have often remarked as involving much hardship and injustice to persons accused of offences.'
