  • 'No 129 [Bisley Road] (Stroud Poor Law Institution, including including The lock up) SO 8604 NW 26/16 II 2. 1836. Ashlar. Pitched stone roofs. 3 storeys. Double panopticon with administrative buildings in centre. Chapel with cupola, Gothick windows and fragments of internal wall paintings. Superintendant's house of 1899. Lock-up with cells and Dead Room.'

  • 'Stroud Union workhouse was built 1836-40 at a site to the north of Bisley Road'...'to accommodate up to 500 inmates'. 'A new master's house with central archway was erected at the south of the administration block in 1899. A new mortuary and vagrants' block were also added in a separate building to the east of the workhouse.'
