Descriptions

  • 'Former Lockup, now lockup garage, 1837, of Flemish bond brickwork with pale headers; pyramidal roof of graded grey slate. Projecting garage doors replace the former doorway. 2 semicircular barred, stone-cased openings above a plain stone band, 2 metres above floor-level. Between the openings is inscribed LOCKUP 1837.'

  • 'A small stone built room with a heavy grill on the window...It was free standing before the conversion into a B&B some time in the last 20 years. '
    Notes from a resident

  • '[p.44] The Fire Station was the Lock-up (dated 1837) and adjoined property in High Street; now used as a Catholic Church and named 'Mount View'. [p.105]. Later buildings of some merit include the Lock Up dated 1837. This is completely Georgian in appearance with its Flemish Bond brickwork and Tonne slate roof. Its appearance is only marred by the clay hip tiles. Presumably it was once used as a prison of some kind or as a pound for stray animals. [Note: a pencil sketch of the lock-up appears on p.82]'
