Description

  • 'This lock up house, consisting of a cellar in the police station, is situated on the ouskirts of the town. It is private property, rented by the county. There are two cells: one of which is 12 feet long, 7 1/2 feet wide, and 7 1/2 feet high ... The other is 12 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 7 1/2 feet high ... The cells are damp. They are warmed by an iron stove pipe which passes through them. They are lighted and ventilated, each by a grated opening over the door, but the light and ventilation are quite sufficient. There is a resident keeper, and the cells are tolerably secure. There are benches to lie on, and rugs for bedding ... The only night vessel is a tub.'
